ATMCH History

ATMCH began as a liaison committee of the Association of Directors of Maternal and Child Health and CCS Programs, now known as the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP).   In this forum, MCH faculty met with MCH directors from the states to discuss curricula, important events and the academic structure of MCH programs. In 1972, the members of this committee decided to form their own association, separate from AMCHP. ATMCH was consequently formed but continues to maintain its close ties to AMCHP.

Since its inception, ATMCH has held two semi-annual meetings.  One meeting continued to be held at the annual AMCHP conference while the other was held at a members's school.  The meeting held at a member's school had two sections.  One was dedicated to the business of the association and the other one is the scientific discussion about MCH.  For example, a topic one year was centered on the factors that prevent children from receiving vaccinations.  Holding the meetings at different schools also enabled members to learn about others programs and environments in which they worked. Currently, one meeting is held in conjunction with APHA in the Fall and the other is held in conjuction with AMCHP in the Spring.
